Prof. Cohen was born in Tel Aviv in 1938.  He received there his elementary and secondary education and was active in a youth movement (Habonim-the United Movement). He served in the Israeli Army (Nahal infantry) in the years 1956-1959.

Prof. Cohen studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and received his B.Sc. degree in physics and mathematics in 1962 and his M.Sc. degree in physics in 1964.  For two years (1963-4) he taught physics and mathematics at the “Rehavia” high school in Jerusalem.

From 1964 till 1967 he studied physics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, where he received his Ph.D. degree and spent a few months as a post-doctoral fellow. Then, he joined Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, as a member of technical staff.

In 1969, Prof. Cohen joined the Department of Physics of the Technion, and served as the department head in 1984-1986.  He also served as the head of the “Barbara and Norman Seiden Advanced Optoelectronics Research Center” since its establishment in 1989 till 1998.

In the academic years 1974/5 and 1978/9, and during the summers of 1970, 1973 and 1980, Prof. Cohen conducted research at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, as a visiting scientist. In 1982/3 he did so at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, Palo Alto, CA.  For one quarter in 1991 he taught physics at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.  Prof. Cohen conducted research during summer visits at the Universite Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France (1988) and at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale Lausanne, Switzerland (1991).

During all of his research years, Prof. Cohen published 145 scientific papers, most of them reported on research done in collaboration with colleagues or with graduate students.   Under his guidance, a total of 34 students received their Ph.D. or M.Sc. degrees in physics. Currently, he supervises 3 graduate students (some in collaboration with other faculty members).

Prof. Cohen is married to Ayala Cohen (who is a professor of statistics at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Technion).  They have two sons and four grandchildren.
